چکیده

Fatigue crack growth can be strongly influenced by crack closure, i. e., the contacting of the opposing faces of a fatigue crack above the minimum load in a loading cycle. This crack closure shields the crack tip from the full stress field, but different views are held regarding the extent of this shielding. The type of closure, whether it be plasticity-induced, or roughness-induced may also playa role. According to Elber, who considered plasticity-induced closure, the crack is effectively closed as soon as the first detectable closure is developed in the wake of the crack tip. However, Otto Buck and his colleagues, who used ultrasonic waves to investigate crack closure, have been in the forefront of those who claim that the crack tip continues to close even after the first closure contacts have been made, thereby leading to a lesser degree of shielding than in Elber's view. The purpose of the present paper is to review the extensive work in the area highlighting the ultrasonic approaches as well as the current state of the art concerning crack closure, and to discuss the various views concerning the extent of shielding provided by crack closure. In the 1970s when Elber [1,2] first conceived of the concept of crack closure Otto Buck and his co-workers [3-11] were using ultrasonic approaches to follow fatigue crack growth in structural alloys. The ultrasonic signatures clearly showed direct evidence for crack closure and the continuing closing of the crack as the load was reduced after closure was first observed. Fatigue crack growth ahead of the propagating crack is dominated by the cyclic plastic deformation that occurs ahead of the propagating crack. The mechanics of the crack opening is such that a crack is not completely open under a tensile load unless a critical crack closure stress is exceeded. The crack closure phenomenon has the effect of reducing crack propagation rate by reduction of the range in stress intensity,

Retardation and repair of fatigue cracks in a microcapsule toughened epoxy composite – Part I: Manual infiltration

As a first step towards a new crack healing methodology for cyclic loading, this paper examines two promising crack-tip shielding mechanisms during fatigue of a microcapsule toughened epoxy. Artificial crack closure is achieved by injecting precatalyzed monomer into the crack plane to form a polymer wedge at the crack tip. The effect of wedge geometry is also considered, as dictated by crack lo...

Fatigue Crack Growth in a Particulate TiB2-Reinforced Powder Metallurgy Iron-Based Composite

Fatigue crack growth behavior has been examined in a particulate titanium diboride (TiB2)–reinforced iron-based composite that had been produced via a mechanical alloying process. Comparison with equivalent unreinforced material indicated that fatigue crack growth resistance in the composite was superior to monolithic matrix material in the near-threshold regime. The composite exhibited relativ...

Mechanisms of Fatigue Crack Propagation in Metals, Ceramics and Composites: Role of Crack Tip Shielding*

Crack tip shielding phenomena, whereby the "effective crack-driving force" actually experienced at the crack tip is locally reduced, are examined with reference to fatigue crack propagation behavior in metals, composites and ceramics. Sources of shielding are briefly described in terms of mechanisms relying on the production of elastically constrained zones which envelop the crack (zone shieldi...

An Evaluation of the Plasticity-Induced Crack-Closure Concept and Measurement Methods

An assessment of the plasticity-induced crack-closure concept is made, in light of some of the questions that have been raised on the validity of the concept, and the assumptions that have been made concerning crack-tip damage below the crack-opening stress. The impact of using other crack-tip parameters, such as the cyclic crack-tip displacement, to model crack-growth rate behavior was studied...

Mixed-mode, high-cycle fatigue-crack growth thresholds in Ti±6Al±4V II. Quanti®cation of crack-tip shielding

The role of crack-tip shielding in in ̄uencing mixed-mode (mode I‡ II) fatigue-crack growth thresholds for large, through-thickness cracks in a Ti±6Al±4V turbine blade alloy is examined under high-cycle fatigue loading conditions, i.e., at a loading frequency of 1000 Hz in ambient temperature air for load ratios (Kmin=Kmax) of R ˆ 0:1±0.8. Techniques are developed to quantify crack-tip shielding...
